Mr. Rao told presspersons that the State Government was "dragging its feet in the investigation" despite the arrest of the TDP legislator, C. Krishna Yadav, by a Special Investigation Team from Maharashtra.
Though the State had set up its own SIT on September 9 following Mr. Yadav's arrest, Mr. Rao's contention was that the case was proceeding at a "snail's pace".
"What has the SIT done till date? And, why is the Director-General of Police, Sukumara, making all the statements on behalf of the SIT," he said and alleged that the DGP was "helping the culprits" who were said to have "links with the underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim".
Referring to a recent statement made by Mr. Yadav from prison that he had been made a scapegoat and indicating that more TDP MLAs were involved in the racket — which was first unearthed in 1999 — he asked why the police "was not taking the case seriously".
Taking a dig at Mr. Naidu's claim of providing a transparent administration, he dismissed his give the case to the CBI as an "attehttp://www.hindu.com/2003/09/22/stories/2003092204331100.htmmpt to delay the investigation".
On Mr. Naidu's claim that the scam extended beyond the State's boundaries, Mr. Rao said that the Chief Minister ought to first address the problem within his jurisdiction and that the Maharashtra Government was doing a good job in investigating the scam.
He said the Congress would carry out a State-wide campaign against the Naidu Government on the issue.
